Last week Miracles from Heaven hit the theater for opening weekend. My husband and I got out without the kids to go see it (which is a miracle itself).
It’s the account of a young girl who became seriously ill with an incurable intestinal problem. Doctors tried the best they could to help her but she only grew worse. Her mother struggled with faith- how could God let this happen to a young girl.
A few people from church became critical saying that the sickness must be because of someone’s sin.
The family was stressed by the financial pressure of on going medical bills, travel to a distance hospital and the equity they had invested in a new business before their daughter got sick.
It looked hopeless, they were pressed in at every side. It appeared that God had failed them.
Yet in the midst of Anna’s sickness she still ministered to another girl, her roommate in the hospital who was dying of cancer, and offered her faith.
When all seemed lost. When the doctor sent them home telling them to just make her comfortable – a miracle came.
Though the movie offers no concrete gospel presentation the message is clear – God is at work around us, in our everyday lives. He is here. He is with us. He cares for us in our pain. And He can work a miracle even when it seems impossible.
I’m thrilled to see more faith centered movies hitting the theaters. I’d encourage everyone to make it out to support this film which gives the credit for healing to God. But be prepared to be moved, there was hardly a dry eye in the theater.
