This month my article for the Hudson River Sampler took a different twist as I felt led to honor granparents on their special day. The article is as follows entitled Celebrate Grandparents

With glee little ones run up to loved faces screaming, “Grammy” and “Pop”. Much to the children’s delight a trip is underway for a day at the library, park or zoo with Grandma or Grandpa. With mutual affection the old and the young look forward to their time together.

This is the way with grandparents. One generation grows up, and another is born. Soon the cycle begins again and parents become grandparents. The hard work of raising children is over and the fun of grandchildren begins (or so I’m told). In the perfect order of family life God gave grandparents a special place in each child’s heart.

Some of us are fortunate to have known all our grandparents while others are not. For those who did, I hope fond memories are attached to the name. As I reminisce over childhood days with my grandparents I recall evenings of ice cream long past my bedtime, a trip to Disney, days at their farm feeding the calves, summer vacation spent at the lake, lessons in canoeing and making homemade ice cream. Memories, rich and beautiful of this set of people God placed in my life and called “grandparents”.

On the Sunday after Labor Day look on the calendar and read the writing in small print: Grandparents’ Day. It is an obscure holiday that is often overlooked as summer ends and the activities of the year begin full swing again.  This year let’s all remember to send special thanks to those who are grandparents.  Thank them for the part they played in our lives, for the love they gave and the wisdom they shared.  Whatever you do in celebration of this day it is more about appreciation and love flowing from the heart than about the largess of a gift.

As we all commemorate this day, let’s be reminded to thank God for the gift of family. For all the grandparents: Happy Grandparent’s Day.

For our grandparents we decided to make homemade cards like the following. Have a blessed Grandparents Day to you all.20130908-072934.jpg 20130908-072927.jpg
