A number of years ago Walt wrote me the following poem. I was a young person wondering what direction I should take in life. Especially in our youth there are usually a lot of well-intentioned people talking to use about what we should do to pursue our future. At times this advice of others was overwhelming to me. My mind could so easily get crowded by what people thought I should be doing so much so that I could not sense clear direction from the Lord.

In His Time
“I could be, I would be, I should be!
Is that all you can see in me?”

Some think I should head in another direction.
Some say: “Not there! You’re in need of correction.”

Everyone seems to know what I should do.
I don’t want to offend, but what I need is His cue.

It may seem that in this place I’m missing the mark,
But contrary to what you may think, to His will I embark.

Although this is not a place of praise and applause,
The lives I can effect is ample cause—

To continue in His calling at this time in the race.
Always allowing Him to use me whatever the case.

To wherever He sends me I’m ready to stand.
In obedience to Him I am faithful to His command.

“I could be, I would be, I should be!
Is that all you see in me?

Remember what Jesus said to Peter;
“What is that to thee!” (John 21:22)

As I look back at that time period of my life the most important advice I might give a young person is the same as what Walt gave me – wait for the timing of the Lord – press through all that people are trying to tell you until you know it is God’s direction.

This might not apply just to those who are young, but all through our lives. Often people like to speak “wisdom” to us but it might not always be God’s wisdom. Looking at life we can get disappointed because we might not be where we thought we would be, but perhaps we are right where God wants us to be, learning the lessons He has for us during this time so that we will be ready for the next step He has for us.
