Lack of Silence

Recently I was surprised to hear one of my fifth grade Sunday school students say that she hates silence. In an age with so many technological devices that produce noise, with cell phones at our finger tips, it is no wonder that our young people have grown accustom to noise.

I have always loved to go to quiet places with the Lord –

walking –

jogging –

hiking –

anywhere to enjoy quietness, most especially in nature.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy we lost power for nearly a day. No tv. No music. No house phone. It was quiet. (Nothing compared to the devastation of many south of us.)

Christian Silence in Our Hearts

This was a reminder that silence comes not always in the our environment but in our hearts. There were a great many years when I would try to go to places alone to find silence because I was searching for silence inside. The peace of God was not reigning in my heart and I longed for that. Through the years as I have grown and learned, the silence of God within my heart has also grown – a deep calm – the peace of God.

The following is a poem I wrote some time ago entitled Solitude of Silence

It’s in the solitude of silence
That His voice can be heard
It’s in the solitude of silence
That His whispers never fade
It’s in the solitude of silence
That His heart speaks to mine
It’s in the solitude of silence
That I find I have been forgiven
It’s in the solitude of silence
That all my fears have flown away
It’s in the solitude of silence
That all frustration melts to nothing
It’s in the solitude of silence
That my burdens are lifted
It’s in the solitude of silence
That I lay all down for Him
It’s in the solitude of silence
That strength and grace are given
It’s in the solitude of silence
There is a path for each tomorrow
It’s in the solitude of silence
That I learn to love Him more
It’s in the solitude of silence
That my heart sings once again
It’s here He lives to me
Here He speaks to me
Here I know His love
It’s here – in silence.
