How many times have we heard that we should be spending quiet time with the Lord each day so that we can be strengthened to do the work of the Lord that day?

I was pondering this. What I discovered is that quiet time with the Lord is only a means to an end not an end in itself. I used to think that simply spending time with the Lord every day was enough to give me strength for the day.  It was like a formula to me. If I spend “x” amount of time with the Lord I will have “x” amount of strength for each day. Therefore it became a functional way in which I thought I could reach God. I am all for the daily quiet time with the Lord each morning but as soon as it becomes a functional aspect of life that we are treating as the right thing to do to fellowship with God it loses its power.

For my own life I would say that even in my daily quiet time I have to press through the functionality of it to truly seek God.  Deuteronomy 4:29 says “But if [from there] you seek the Lord your God, you will find Him if you look for Him with all your heart.” If during my quiet time with the Lord I am not seeking Him with all my heart I am not going to find Him that day. This time with the Lord cannot become a ritual way to receive strength for my day. If I make it a ritual I am simply trying to use God as batteries to recharge my life. Absolutely there is strength in God and in a miraculous way I continually know His powerful strength flowing through me to do the things He has called me to do. However I do not receive strength from Him unless I am focused on simply having a relationship with Him.

I would encourage you that if you are approaching quiet time as your Christian duty, press past that sense of duty with your whole heart to truly seek God. Only then will you sense the presence of His strength in your life.
