This week I started reading through John Hagee’s devotional His Glory Revealed. It is a seven week devotional about the Jewish feasts, the first one being the Passover.
As I reflected on the first passover many things came to mind about the meaning for us today. When the Israelites were slaves in Egypt a lamb was killed and the blood was spread on the door frames of the houses so that the angel of death would know that these people believed the Word of God, were God’s people and would not enter their homes. Even though they were already God’s chosen, He told them to do this visible act of obedience. If they had not obeyed their first-born sons would not have been spared.
For us today, the lamb has already been slain. The innocent blood is there. His blood covers us when we accept Him as Savior, marking us as His children. Not to say that isn’t enough but is there more?
A number of years ago I learned the teaching that we should pray the blood of Jesus over ourselves, our homes and our children as a covering from the spiritual warfare around us. It took me awhile to understand this concept as I had only attributed the power of His blood to be for eternal salvation.
As I have grown in my understanding of spiritual warfare, and felt its very presence, I have come to believe the power of verbally putting His blood on the door frames of our hearts through prayer. There is an enemy prowling around looking for someone to attack (I Peter 5:8). When our spiritual armor is not up, when we are not depending on the blood of the Lamb to cover us from the attack of the enemy, thoughts can enter that are not from God. Not only that the enemy can interfere with our lives and circumstances. When trusting in God, in the blood of the Lamb, which covers His children, we do not have to fear the attack of the evil one because we are promised that he will pass over when he sees the blood on the door posts of our heart, our property and our family.
Putting the blood on the door frame our hearts is not something to be done once and then forgotten. The feast of the Passover is not done once and then forgotten. No, it is celebrated year after year. Similarly, must we not claim the power in His blood day after day?
