As our church has been celebrating Advent, several weeks ago a congregant spoke on the wonder of the season.
As she began to sing
I wonder as I wander out under the sky
How Jesus the Saviour did come for to die
For poor on’ry people like you and like I;
I wonder as I wander out under the skyWhen Mary birthed Jesus ’twas in a cow’s stall
With wise men and farmers and shepherds and all
But high from God’s heaven, a star’s light did fall
And the promise of ages it then did recall.If Jesus had wanted for any wee thing
A star in the sky or a bird on the wing
Or all of God’s Angels in heaven to sing
He surely could have it, ’cause he was the KingI wonder as I wander out under the sky
How Jesus the Saviour did come for to die
For poor on’ry people like you and like I;
I wonder as I wander out under the sky
Born and raised in a Christian family I have always known the true meaning of Christmas is Christ’s birth but in the familiarity of it I believe I have forgotten the wonder.
If I quiet my heart to think of that night in Bethlehem, what was it like for those who saw a star shinning so brightly in the sky? Or to think of angels singing on a dark night? Would it rock my world if I had seen those sights? I’m sure that it would have!
This year I have begun to look for ways my family can more richly celebrate the wonder of Christmas….Christ’s birth, a gift to the world! Marvel at God’s goodness to us.
Some Ideas I have
- A Jesse Tree which follows the lineage of Jesus throughout the advent season. This is a picture of our Jesse tree in progress. I am working on Scripture references to go with each symbol and when it is finished I will include a post with printables and directions.
- From Truth in the tinsel I found some cute ideas
- Some advent activities from Kimccrary blog.
Whatever your traditions this advent season might we all celebrate Jesus, wondering at the grace of God that He would send His Son for us.
