I don’t write as one having the answer, but as one who has questioned, “what is a miracle?”
It could be through the healing power of God as told in Vanessa’s testimony. Or as written about in Martha L. Shaw Blessings in a Tattered Cardboard Box. I am only coming to see as The Lord opens the eyes of my heart, that He is working miracles all around me and sometimes I just don’t see them. This musing led me to write the following articl for Novembers publication of the Hudson River Sampler.
What is a miracle?
By Naomi Fata
When Jesus walked the earth he healed the sick, opened the eyes of the blind and performed numerous other miracles. Have you been a little bit envious of those who lived during that era, who were able to see His miracles? Ever thought that those who lived at Jesus’ time were a privileged group?
But what is a miracle? Is it that we just don’t see them?
Several years ago I heard of a woman whose house stood untouched in the midst of a storm while the homes of those around her were utterly destroyed. Before the storm she had prayed for protection. Is that a miracle?
I know of people who have entered the operating room for the removal of a life-threatening tumor only for the doctors to find the tumor had disappeared. Wasn’t this the miracle prayed for?
These seem so similar to the miracles of Jesus except the worker of the miracle was not visible to the physical eyes like He was 2000 years ago.
Is not every answered prayer a miracle? Yet how frequently when prayers are answered our hearts remain grateful for only a short time? When the prayer cannot be answered with human strength but only by the power of the All Mighty it is a miracle. There is no other explanation.
On the other hand, do miracles not happen because we do not understand our desperate need for divine intervention? Therefore because we don’t comprehend our need we don’t seek, we don’t ask, and we don’t pray as if we believe?
Maybe we should all pray that we might have the eyes of faith to see the miracles in our lives and the heart to believe in a miracle-working God.
