From childhood we are asked what we want to be when we grow up? Maybe a doctor, a firefighter, a lawyer, an astronaut, a teacher….

Whether we live out the childhood dream or find a new career path we embrace a title in our vocation and from then on the most frequently asked question when making a new acquaintance is ‘What do you do for a living?’ This easily becomes part of our identity. As if this tells the character we have or the social standing in society – as if the title encompasses the grand spectrum of who we are. We are known for what we do.

These identities that we hold – do they meet the need of our hearts? Too often I hear people saying ‘I’m just trying to find myself’. It is a common thread from adolescence through middle-age. Why? Because we judge ourselves by what we do, and what we accomplish. We rely on this to define our personhood, as if these are the things that make us unique, important and valuable.

Do these titles really tell us who we are?

They have no ability to satisfy our need for identity.

What if the only identity we had was that we are a child of the King? Our worth, purpose, and goals in life are wrapped up in this. What if when we are introduced to someone it isn’t what we do that stands out but WHOSE we are? Is not this the only identity that fills our identity crisis? Only in Him, who created us to know Him, can we find who we were created to be. He can give you identity and purpose, transforming you into the person He created you to be.

Don’t let those around you or the pressure of society push you to embrace a label based on vocation, race, awards, accomplishment or family status. Instead let HIM tell you who you are. If you are have received Him, you are His child, His beloved. THIS IS WHO YOU ARE.
