I have been asked to speak at a ladies’ event this spring. Some of you readers may be seasoned speakers but I am new at this public speaking thing. The most speaking I have done is through drama team in college or teaching our children’s Sunday School class.

I have been continually in prayer about this event since I was asked. What burdens me the most is the desire to not just communicate my words, or what the Lord has taught me but words that truly permeate hearts and change lives.

The Lord brought me to 1 Corinthians 2:4-5

My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power.

Paul’s message and preaching were not wise in man’s ways but demonstrated the Spirit’s power.

The New Bible Commentary: Revised says of verse 5 ‘Paul’s purpose from the outset was to ensure that their faith was divinely based and not due in any sense to human persuasiveness.’

It would be easy to go in front of people to persuade them of Christ – to persuade them that He can satisfy their hunger and thirst – their emptiness. But it is not my desire to persuade. It is my desire that God would speak through me.

Prayer

Lord, let me speak Your words, which are a demonstration of your power so that people will not see the wisdom that I know. Let the words I speak not flow from my own knowledge but be a demonstration of Your powerful Spirit living inside me. Amen

………………

No matter if you are a public speaker, a Sunday School teacher, small group leader, mentor or friend might we all pray with fervor that He would demonstrate His power through us as we open our mouths.
