Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful.
I Corinthians 4:2
As believers we are all stewards in God’s kingdom. This morning as I read Luke 16:1-13 I was struck by Jesus’ words of commendation to the unjust/dishonest steward.
8 “The master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly. For the people of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own kind than are the people of the light. 9 I tell you, use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings. (Luke 16:8-9 NIV)
On Biblegateway.com I found a commentary on this (click here). This commentator’s view is that sometimes people in the world are more careful about thinking through what they use their money for than Christians, practically projecting long-term goals for investments. As believers we should be considering how are investments of time, money, strength etc are used for the long-term benefit of the kingdom of God. Not that we should invest to the point of emotional, or physical exhaustion but in all things might we seek His face so that we might receive direction from Him in these matters.
In what areas is He challenging you to faithful stewardship?
For me, I know at times I become spread too thin, stretching my efforts into too many areas so that none are done well. As I approach this coming year my prayer is that I would learn to abide in Him, finding direction for commitments and focus to do well at those things He has given me to do as in the following areas
- Family: diligence in training my children, which means time in preparation
- Business: being self-employed, interacting with the community, this is a mission field, may I always be prepared, and alert to the Lord’s prompting as He shows me open hearts.
- Writing: not writing from the flesh but as He directs me through His Spirit, writing that which is lasting, not fluff
- Teaching Sunday School: even though it is a children’s class I cannot take for granted seeds sown at a young age, therefore with soberness I ask for His help in preparation.
