Church Coffee Hourcoffee

How many of us have church coffee hour after the Sunday morning service?  For the purpose of fellowship and getting to know the other believers of our local church body. Why does this have to be confined to church alone? The other 6 days of the week provide equal opportunity for fellowship.

Whether coffee or tea or just a light bite to eat this would involve possibly less than one hour of our time.

In the events of every day life it is easy for us to believe that we don’t have time to reach out to someone else. As I have looked at my own schedule I find that mid-morning is usually relatively free. I could use this time to catch up on all the work that is not done – laundry, shopping, errands and many other things but these activities are always pressing in on me. Often I want to serve God but feel like I just don’t have time. Our Father graciously showed me one way to serve even in the midst of a busy life.

INVITE FRIENDS FOR COFFEE BREAK

This hardly takes any of my time. All I have to do is pick up the phone to call someone, or send them a Facebook message, or text them a couple of days ahead of time. Brewing a pot of coffee or tea takes no extra time on my part. Then when the friend or friends arrive we have a nice time of sharing.  Often people just want someone to talk to, a friend who is available. But the enemy leads us to believe that the to-do list that we have is more important than reaching out.

I happen to work from home and have small children, therefore having a coffee break at home is easier for me than meeting somewhere else.  All of us have different circumstances in life. If you have an office job perhaps meeting at a coffee shop on your lunch break would be more convenient or if you have a flexible schedule on the road you can schedule a time that is best for you and your friend.

Not just friends

This does not have to be confined to just your friends either. Perhaps there is someone new at church or at work. Or a new neighbor. Or an acquaintance going through a rough time. Ask God to lay the right person on your heart. He knows who needs a touch of love far better than we do. The most we can do is be available.

I try not to plan an agenda for this time. Sometimes it ends with the person sharing prayer requests and we have a great time praying together. Other times it is simply a time of talking about what is happening in our lives. If it is someone I don’t know well we get acquainted.

No matter what our lives are like, when we give our time to God He is able to use us to minister to others.  As Walt says

A good formula to remember is A +P = O or be available plus be prepared equals 0pportunity
