In the span of a week I have experienced the passing of a friend and the birth of a child. One life coming to a close. Another beginning. To look back over the accomplishments of a life, to grieve the loss, yet celebrate a legacy left. And then to look at the face of a babe, seeing untapped potential, wondering what this little one will become, what he will do with the life he is given, what changes he will face in his life time. Seeing both ends of the spectrum causes one to ponder life. We will all face the end one day. The number of our days is unknown. There is no guarantee for us, or our children. The words of a beloved hymn by Bill Gaither ring in my ears

How sweet to hold a newborn baby, And feel the pride and joy he gives; But greater still the calm assurance: This child can face uncertain days because He lives!

This is the truth. When our hope is rooted in the One who lives it doesn’t matter that we don’t know the number of our days on earth. We don’t have to spend our time anxiously wondering about the life of ourselves or our families. What matters is where our hope is – the One we live for. He holds it all in His hands. When we know Him, when those who pass know Him, the last breath on earth is not the end but only the beginning of eternity with life that is sure – life that never ends – life with no more sorrow – no more pain.
